Following Chief Ephraim Chikwaka’s plead to have Government build houses for chiefs, the Housing Minister Daniel Garwe, responded saying the government had observed that the construction of houses for chiefs is not a sustainable programme. Chiefs received offroad 4×4 cars not so long ago and once again need assistance from the Government.
Though like any other civil servant, chiefs rely on the Government for their upkeep and welfare. However, considering the large number of chiefs the country has, it would put a huge strain on the national budget. Already these traditional leaders receive a monthly allowance to cover general expenses.
